| CLIPPERS VS. CAVALIERS PREVIEW - RYAN MENEZES | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
A victory at Quicken Loans Arena would tie the franchise record for consecutive road wins, set by the Buffalo Braves in 1973 and never matched by the West Coast incarnations of the team. The last time the Clippers won four road games in a row 2007, when they did it twice.
The third game in the Clippers’ six-game Grammy road trip comes at 4 p.m. PT against the upstart Cavaliers in Quicken Loans Arena. Here are some things to watch tonight as the Clippers (15-7) try to make a little history:
Combo guard Randy Foye is expected to start in Billups’ place, leaving Mo Williams to remain in his role as sparkplug sixth man. Both Foye’s and Williams’ minutes will have to increase, but the player who could stand to gain the most is Eric Bledsoe. The second-year guard has so far played a little over a minute in just one game this season. He rejoined the team last week after recovering from offseason knee surgery. With the Clippers’ guard rotation a little thinner, Bledsoe will be in line for his first meaningful minutes this season once he is fully recovered from off-season knee surgery.
The trade the Clippers and Cavaliers swung last season was swift and somewhat shocking, but it ended with a positive result for both teams. L.A. sent Baron Davis and a first-round pick to Cleveland, which sent Mo Williams and Jamario Moon. That first-round pick turned into the No. 1 overall selection, now the odds-on favorite for rookie of the year in Kyrie Irving. Williams could be in line for some hardware as well as a top sixth man of the year candidate. Each team collected some cap relief as well: the Clippers were rid of Davis’ hefty contract and able to make free agency moves, and the Cavaliers later cut Davis free via the amnesty clause. All things considered, the single trade has shaped the two franchises for the forseeable future.
The Cavaliers were one of the teams Blake Griffin was able to take full advantage of last season. He dropped 32 and 30 points in two games against what was one of the NBA’s worst teams, though Cleveland had already lost Anderson Varejao for the season by the time the two teams first met. This matchup promises to be a different one with Varejao having a career year (10.8 points per game, 11.9 rebounds, NBA-high 4.7 offensive rebounds). Griffin and DeAndre Jordan will have a persistent threat on the offensive boards to be worried about throughout the game. |
